Local superintendents warn LIT changes could slash school operating dollars

Superintendents from Mooresville and Martinsville said the proposed local income tax structure could create sizable operating shortfalls: Mooresville estimated roughly $700,000 lost (about 7% of operations); Martinsville warned of multi-million-dollar impacts and urged public engagement.

Several school leaders told the task force the proposed structure risks deep budget cuts for districts. Jake Allen, superintendent of Mooresville Schools, said: "It is about $700,000 for Mooresville Schools. We're about 7% of our operation budget." He said increased costs for transportation and insurance mean districts have limited ability to absorb reductions and may need to defer bus purchases and other fixed costs.
