Aledo Public Library requests higher county support; commissioners keep funding level for now

Representatives from the Aledo Public Library presented data showing sharp growth in cardholders and circulation since moving to a new facility, and said the library’s defined service population has increased roughly 55 percent according to Texas State Library metrics. The library requested Parker County increase its annual contribution from $22,007.70 to $35,003.11 to reflect the higher usage.

Library representative Miss Gorman said circulation jumped when the library moved into new space and the library has increased programming and collection purchases; she explained the request would allow the library to serve more Parker County patrons. “We do not [charge] non‑city residents,” she told the court, adding that the library issues cards to Parker County residents and those in Alito ISD.

Commissioners questioned whether neighboring cities had been asked to contribute; staff said the city of Aledo provides roughly $347,000 for library operations and that other municipalities had not recently contributed. Multiple commissioners said they supported continued county support but wanted to encourage municipal partnerships; one commissioner proposed a one‑time increase with a return to prior levels next year if partner cities don’t step up. The court ultimately voted to approve the same dollar amount as the prior year for county support.
