Demographer warns of sustained kindergarten declines; district cautioned on yields

The district's demographer from Zonda presented a fall enrollment report showing sustained declines in kindergarten capture and modest yields from multifamily development, factors central to Coppell ISD's enrollment forecast.

"We've seen some steep declines in kindergarten, not just in Coppell, but all throughout the state," the demographer said, reporting a kindergarten capture rate near 59 to 60 percent and projecting kindergarten enrollment near 600 under current trends. The presentation noted that newcomers and leavers analysis produced a small cohort growth partly offset by broader declines.

Zonda's representative also reviewed multifamily yields, estimating about 17 to 20 students per 100 units in some developments and explaining that unit mix (one-bedroom versus two- and three-bedroom) affects elementary yields. The demographer said Cypress Waters has many one-bedroom units, which depress yield compared with single-family developments.

Trustees asked for more granular yield data by neighborhood and for multi-year comparisons that isolate COVID-era anomalies; staff agreed to supply additional breakdowns. The report was used later in the meeting as staff and trustees debated a multi-year budget and possible campus consolidations.
