Council directs convertible gateway connection; agrees default should be closed to autos
After extended public comment and staff presentations on the Gateway project and Gangnes neighborhood connectivity, the council directed staff to design a convertible roadway that is initially closed to auto through‑traffic and can be opened later if local conditions change (for example, if Wagner extension is completed or the gateway site develops).

Councilors returned to a long‑running discussion about the gateway site and whether the new street should connect as an auto through‑route to the Gangnes neighborhood. Staff acknowledged earlier shortcomings in community outreach and apologized for communications that residents found insensitive. Dawn Mellon, a long‑time Gangnes resident, told the council the rebuild process after the fire has been traumatic and said residents are concerned that sidewalks, curb work and green‑space will remove parking and private landscaping they funded while rebuilding.
