Residents press for moratorium on data centers; UW‑Extension says none have applied

Several residents used public comment time to urge the Bayfield County Board to adopt a moratorium on data centers and to request stricter local controls. Micky Budge (Town of Port Wing) told the board she is “in support of moratorium on data centers in Bayfield County, and in support of defunding flock cameras in Bayfield County.” Other commentators — including Gayle Gonsior, Jeff Silbert and Kim Suske — expressly asked the board to consider a moratorium or moratorium study.

At the board’s request for background, Karl Green of UW‑Extension gave a proactive presentation and said “there has been no request for a data center in the area.” He explained why data centers look to Wisconsin, distinctions between county and municipal zoning authority, development standards, potential tax benefits, and risks such as impacts on local services and levy limits. The board heard public concerns but took no formal moratorium action during the meeting.
