Derby Recreation Commission reports growth, new projects and a facility fund

Representatives from the Derby Recreation Commission presented their 2025 annual report to the Derby Board of Education on March 23. DRC superintendent Chris Strum and commission staff summarized participation, staffing and facility highlights, noting membership and program growth as well as investments in planned facility improvements.

The report listed 2025 staffing at about 380 people (32 full time), 634 volunteers contributing roughly 9,600 hours (valued in the presentation at about $298,000), and 7,647 average monthly members — a 3.8% increase over 2024. The DRC reported more than 179,000 program participants and nearly 3,400 facility rentals. Notable 2025 facility work included an LED sign replacement, fitness equipment upgrades and planning for pool-deck and gym-floor rehabilitation. The commission said it has begun planning for future expansion and noted a proposed 0.25-mill facility development fund allocation for future projects.

Board members asked whether a pool was on the immediate horizon and staff said refinishing the current pool deck and studying expansion are under consideration; the DRC described land constraints at the main site and exploratory discussion of a potential north-side facility. Staff said fitness classes, youth sports and special events continued strong participation and the DRC has taken steps to implement wage increases based on a 2025 wage study.
