Commission debates fence and retaining-wall limits; deer-fence materials and enforcement discussed

Aug 26, 2026

BFJ proposed clearer definitions for retaining walls and fences (exempting small walls under 18", special permits for higher walls, combined wall-and-fence height caps) and suggested tightening deer-fence rules to require open welded-wire or plastic mesh; commissioners debated front-yard fence heights and whether to require fence permits to aid enforcement.

BFJ presented a set of clarifying edits for fences and retaining walls aimed at making existing practice consistent with the regulations. Suggested changes include exempting retaining walls under 18 inches from setback requirements, establishing an upper limit on retaining-wall height (BFJ proposed no wall should exceed 8 feet), and limiting combined wall-plus-fence heights so the combined total does not exceed 8 feet in the setback.
