Commissioners and staff describe progress — and remaining problems — on Inkster Housing redevelopment projects

Commissioners and Inkster Housing staff told the joint meeting that two major redevelopment projects are underway and that the commission has worked to hold developers and management accountable on specifications and resident-facing services.

Acting ED Wells said the board had "pushed back" on proposals to swap stainless-steel appliances for cheaper alternatives and that she had stopped the order, telling the meeting "they deserve stainless steel. That's what's on the pamphlets." Resident speakers, however, reported ongoing maintenance issues and inconsistent access to community spaces such as the Simmons Building or Envision Center. One resident asked why the Simmons Building stage and the Envision Center had remained largely unused despite requests for community programming.

Commissioners said they support improvements but cautioned that developers and third-party management companies retain some operational authority under the redevelopment contracts; the commission said it will continue oversight while also recommending clearer resident communications and more frequent management engagement with tenants.
