Sheriff reports uptick in task-force activity; drug supply described as largely imported

Sheriff Sean Marston and Investigator James Shelby briefed the board on recent law-enforcement activity, training and jail statistics. Sheriff Marston highlighted regional task-force work, a series of interdictions and the use of informants and federal partners to pursue higher-level suppliers.

On narcotics trends, investigators said methamphetamine and synthetic opioids are the two principal drugs affecting the Central Minnesota region. "They're coming in by rail. They're coming in by shipping containers. They're coming in by UPS postal," the sheriff said, describing multiple trafficking routes and a shift toward large-scale, outside-the-country production and shipping.

Sheriff Marston and Investigator Shelby also reviewed operational statistics (e.g., citations and calls) and training efforts, and described how local investigations are often held while building federal cases that can take months or years. Commissioners asked about Narcan effectiveness and how task-force operations interface with probation, social services and public-health partners; officers said Narcan availability has reduced reported fatalities but that increasingly potent synthetics can require multiple doses and complicate response.
