ECPPS flags Northeastern High renovation as top priority as growth projections continue

ECPPS Superintendent Dr. Keith Parker told the joint meeting that the school district is actively studying how projected housing growth could affect facilities and capacity. He said the district has 13 schools across the city and county and that, in the district’s current counts, Central Elementary is the only school over capacity; to address immediate need the School Board approved a four‑classroom modular unit for Central Elementary to be installed this summer.

Parker noted that Northeastern High School has a design capacity of 1,500 students and currently enrolls about 555; the school is a renovation priority in part because its footprint could accommodate additional grade levels if modernized. He emphasized that many school buildings date to the mid-20th century or earlier and that the district will apply again for the state’s Needs Based Capital Grant (the presentation said the grant can award up to $65 million) to fund larger renovation or construction projects. Parker said the district expects to publish the Facility Condition Assessment and Land Use Study in public sessions in May or June 2026 and that further facility recommendations will follow.
