Resident presents petition for speed tables on Yucca Drive, urges quick action

Barbara Redden asked the Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners on Aug. 27 to install speed tables on Yucca Drive and nearby Cactus Drive after a recent traffic study that she said documented multiple drivers traveling well over the 15 mph speed limit.

“I got a 100% of the people on Yucca Drive to sign with the petition to get the speed bumps put in,” Redden said, speaking from 5781 Yucca Drive and showing the board a map and a petition she said Public Works had helped her compile. She told the board a June study recorded drivers at 59 mph and 56 mph on streets posted at 15 mph and said the new subdivision at the east end of Yucca Drive has increased cut-through traffic.

Redden said she will be walking the route with a walker after an upcoming knee replacement and urged the board to prioritize a quick response and installation of traffic calming devices. She said she canvassed neighbors on both Yucca and Cactus drives and collected near-unanimous support for speed tables.

The board took no immediate vote on the request during public forum but thanked Redden and indicated staff would follow up; the chair invited residents to remain for later discussion and scheduled opportunities to bring questions to county staff.

The petition and map Redden submitted were presented to staff at the meeting; the record did not include an immediate timeline or funding source for installation.
