Residents split as library board considers request for a Charlie Kirk display; motion fails

A proposal to recommend a one-week library display honoring Charlie Kirk set off sustained public comment and board debate at the Citrus County Library Advisory Board's evening meeting.

Board member (speaker 23) introduced a recommendation to the library director and County Commission that a display be erected during the week of Oct. 14 to mark what the motion described as Kirk's assassination anniversary. Supporters in public comment said Kirk inspired young readers and promoted engagement; one attendee asked simply that "we do get some kind of... display for Charlie Kirk." Opponents said Kirk's public record makes him too divisive for a dedicated library display. Virginia Owen (speaker 22) read quotations she said were attributable to Kirk and asked, "My question is why are we honoring this man?"

Director Chang repeatedly clarified that the current policy specifies five types of permanent displays (new books, Friends-funded purchases, rotating nonfiction, recently returned and mysteries) and that staff, vetted through quarterly planning meetings and approved by the director, decide specific displays. He told the board there is "nothing in the policy that would say Charlie Kirk's books can't go on a display" but distinguished a rotating or recently-returned display from a dedicated, single-person commemoration.

After public comments and a long board exchange about what counts as "historical" versus "contemporary" and how to avoid politicization in library spaces, the original recommendation to request a Charlie Kirk display failed in a board vote. Members also discussed substitute ideas — for example, rotating displays of deceased American authors by month — as a way to honor authors without singling out living or newly deceased controversial figures.
