Custer County backs resolution opposing mandatory USDA MEID cattle chip tags

Hermosa resident Rick Fox presented a draft resolution asking the commission to oppose a USDA proposal to require MEID radio-frequency identification tags for cattle 18 months or older. Fox told the commission the effort began in Tripp County and several others have passed similar resolutions; he said the tags "don’t make disease tracking easier; they are expensive and there are not enough tags" and noted a related lawsuit is pending in U.S. District Court in Pennington County.
