Sodus Point Planning Board issues limited stop-work order, tables lean-to request for 8039 Lake Rd

The Sodus Point Planning Board on Aug. 17 tabled consideration of a preliminary site-plan for a proposed 17-by-50-foot lean-to at 8039 Lake Rd and authorized a stop-work order on ongoing construction at the property.

Chair Bruce Evener said the board was surprised by an additional 20 feet beyond what had been advertised for the lean-to and recommended legal review before approving changes. The board voted to table the lean-to request pending consultation with the Village attorney and submission of corrected blueprints. Bruce Evener moved to table the case; Janine Fogarty seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

Board members also raised concerns that a porch and other on-site work exceed previously approved dimensions. After discussing safety risks from an uncovered slab, the board voted to issue a stop-work order that "allows Bruce Carey to back fill the cement hole with a slab on top to be done at the applicant’s risk." Janine Fogarty seconded the motion, which passed with all members voting aye.

Applicant Bruce Carey told the board he is adapting plans as construction proceeds and said, "the front of the building is going to be a showplace." Members asked Carey to provide exact blueprints of the porch, fountain and any other new features and cautioned that no further slab work should continue beyond the limited backfilling authorized by the board.

The board instructed Code Enforcement Officer Kevin Druschel to coordinate next steps, including a review with the Village attorney and a formal resubmission of site plans before the board considers lifting the table or changing the stop-work order.
