Senate passes bill requiring human-trafficking training for public schools

Senate Bill 83, carried by Senator Edmonds, passed final passage after a sponsor explanation about how the measure would move responsibility for policy and annual training to local school boards and designated school staff. "Each city parish and other local public school boards and each public school charters is to adopt a policy for human trafficking, victim prevention, identification, reporting and assistance," the sponsor said, and the bill was presented as ready for implementation beginning with the 2026–27 school year.

Senator Edmonds said the bill also proposes designating a school counselor or administrator to advance annual training. The measure passed on final passage by recorded vote; the clerk announced the machine result and the Senate moved on to subsequent items. Supporters described the measure as a safety and reporting improvement; the bill text was ordered to final passage and recorded in the journal.
