Commission approves temporary Main Street closure for consignment store 20th anniversary

The Chanute City Commission voted June 22 to temporarily close portions of Main Street from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on July 11 so a consignment store may hold a 20th‑anniversary celebration featuring food trucks, vendors and activities.

Staff presented the application and recommended approval provided the sponsor secures required vendor licensing and special-event permits, coordinates trash cans and tables with the parks department, and follows posted no‑parking signage. The staff report said the celebration will run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with food trucks and outside vendors required to obtain proper city licensing. After a brief presentation by the event organizer, the commission approved the request by voice vote.

The organizer explained the event’s history: "So Cassie Cleaver started consignment in 2006 on Main Street, and then Cora Finley took it over in 2011. I took it over in 2024. So this year marks 20 years…" Commissioners asked that the sponsor provide a vendor list to community development and noted that vendors must be properly permitted before participating.
