Library nominations delayed after public concern; board hears proposal for self-check system

During public comment, Martin Conkle urged the board to broaden the library’s outreach and questioned the nominations process, saying the library has sometimes functioned more as a private social club than an active public resource. Conkle told the board he submitted credentials and emphasized community fundraising and the need for more adult-focused programming and outreach.

The board agreed to postpone library nominations to the next meeting so required contact information and timelines can be confirmed. Library staff described rising patron numbers — noting a day that served 199 patrons — and proposed a $5,000 programming allocation from the book budget and acquisition of a self-check system to improve check-in and check-out efficiency. Library staff said the self-check will allow staff to free up time for programming. As library staff put it, “It’s a purchase, a self check system, so we can increase efficiency.”

Board members and staff asked for additional budget codes and further detail before finalizing the nomination and budget items; the board directed staff to provide resumes and required contact information at least two weeks before the next meeting.
