District ELD review urges more teacher training after data show persistent gaps

District staff presented a review of English-language development (ELD) services and trend data showing persistent gaps between English learners and the general student population, and recommended multi-year capacity building for leadership and teachers to expand sheltered and content-embedded ELD instruction.

Melissa, speaking as the district’s ELD presenter, told the board the district currently provides K–5 students 30 minutes of pull-out ELD instruction three times a week alongside sheltered instruction in core classes, and argued that the district needs to invest in staff training and a multi-year plan to boost outcomes for emerging bilingual students. "So our goal in ELD is to, support language English language development, but also to support academic success," she said, emphasizing that practices that support English learners also benefit all students.
