Commission approves Buggy Works deck, ADA ramp and optional lean-to roof

Rex Ewald, speaking for Buggy Works, presented a revised deck and roof design and the Monroe Historic Preservation Commission approved the plan after a short discussion about materials and sight lines. The applicant said the new design is slightly smaller than the version presented in May and includes an ADA-compliant ramp that will meet snow-load engineering standards.

"The dimensions of this proposed deck is 51 feet 3 feet by 16 feet 6 inches," said Rex Ewald (S1), who also told the commission the deck would consume five private parking stalls and that another lot provides 21 dedicated stalls for the project. Commissioners asked about materials and finishes; Ewald said his preference was composite decking and a bronze powder-coated aluminum roof system.

A motion to accept the revised plan was moved by Committee member (S8) and seconded by Committee member (S6); members voted in favor. Commissioners and staff discussed roof color and maintenance — one commissioner noted white metal can pick up dirt and suggested a more colored finish — and the applicant said a bronze finish should blend with the building. Staff will record the Certificate of Appropriateness and monitor compliance with any conditions tied to materials and ADA access.
