Prosecutor flags staffing and deposition-cost pressures; council to review classification study

Prosecutor Mahoney joined the session by Zoom to review the office's budget and staffing changes. The prosecutor and councilors noted two long-tenured staffers and an investigator recently retired; the council increased longevity in one line to reflect changes and discussed how investigator staffing will be covered into the new year.

Council members raised a new line-item pressure: depositions. One councilor said deposition-related expenses had grown materially and were reflected in a miscellaneous/depositions line increase. Another member referenced a study from the Indiana Prosecutors Association suggesting additional prosecutorial staffing would reduce pressure on the system; council members asked that the study be distributed to the full council for further consideration.

A separate presentation from a consultant (speaker 8) summarized a classification review of prosecutor-office roles. The presenter said, "I think that the office investigator's position may be somewhat misclassified," and urged the council to consider reclassification and to revive a job-classification committee to review recommended midpoints and classes. The council asked staff to scan and circulate the Wagner, Arun and Shealy report and to coordinate liaison oversight with Jay Davis and the current chair.
