OmniRide reports ridership rebound, pushes microtransit and weekend routes to boost frequency

OmniRide/PRTC presented performance data and near‑term service changes to the Board. Dr. Bob Schneider said the agency has seen strong growth on I‑95 and I‑66 express routes and reported local daily boardings in the 11,000–12,000 range. Schneider described a strategy of reinvesting capacity from underperforming fixed routes into microtransit demand‑response zones to deliver higher frequency on priority corridors such as Route 1 and to better connect riders to VRE stations.

OmniRide said microtransit costs roughly half of a full bus trip and allows the agency to expand area coverage and provide “lifeline” service in low‑density areas. The agency also previewed new weekday and weekend express service (including a Manassas–Tysons Metro Express) and service enhancements that aim to close midday frequency gaps. OmniRide noted financial constraints — most local funding comes from the motor fuels tax — and emphasized grant pursuit, partnerships and customer outreach (Team 360) to fine‑tune service areas.

Supervisors asked about youth ridership, cross‑county connections and workforce partnerships; OmniRide said school‑partnership outreach, on‑site bus demonstrations and internships help attract young riders, while microtransit can stitch neighborhoods to main corridors and transit hubs.
