Wilmette EEC approves dark‑sky webpage, advances lighting code recommendations

Sustainability Coordinator Lucy Mellen provided an overview of draft dark‑sky webpage text and described additional materials submitted by Commissioner Sarina McBride on bird impacts. Commissioners agreed to publish the webpage and to continue drafting code recommendations to reduce uplighting and limit adverse effects on wildlife.

"Commissioner Springer moved to approve the draft dark sky webpage text and Commissioner Glennemeier seconded the motion. All Commissioners present voted in favor," the minutes record. The commission also discussed Village Code language used elsewhere to discourage light that points upward and directed Ms. Mellen to follow up with Land Use Committee staff about scheduling review.

Commissioner Springer suggested offering a yard sign for residents to indicate support for dark skies; Commissioner Glennemeier said she would consult Go Green about resident interest. The commission approved publishing the webpage text but did not adopt binding code changes at the meeting; further code drafting and Land Use Committee coordination were identified as next steps.
