Supervisors cite septic, water and safety when debating lot-size change

Board members argued that increasing the lot-size threshold to 5 acres would better ensure septic and well viability and reduce infrastructure problems, while other supervisors worried about impacts on family transfers and small landowners.

Supporters of a higher lot-size threshold said the change is aimed at public-health and infrastructure protections rather than land-use exclusion. "At least with 5 acres in a development, there is a greater potential to support a septic service as well as obtain drinking water that's suitable for consumption," a board member said during discussion.
