Select Board votes to disable, remove Flock license-plate cameras after public outcry

After extended public comment raising privacy and process concerns, the Ayer Select Board voted to disable and remove privately operated Flock automatic-license-plate cameras and to cancel the contract immediately. The action followed calls for review of how the cameras were funded and installed.

Residents filled the meeting to oppose recently installed Flock automatic-license-plate cameras and to demand transparency about the contract and grant process. William Barnes told the board it appeared town officials bypassed the Select Board and used a $25,000 warrant payment to Flock, citing Massachusetts law Chapter 44, Section 53 and asking the board to investigate whether municipal funds were improperly dispersed.
