City and crossing‑guard supervisor say McGrath crossings are state responsibility; council to press state reps

Jul 2, 2026

Crossing‑guard supervisor Cicero reported an assessment showing mostly adult crossings at Broadway & McGrath and said the crossing is a state highway location served by state crossing guards; the committee discussed pressing state representatives to add coverage and consider ramped enforcement.

The full story

The committee revisited safety at McGrath Highway and Broadway (item 20, 26-0057). Crossing‑guard supervisor Cicero described a site assessment conducted April 14 during morning hours and reported "I had 55 people cross, 50 were adults, 5 were teenagers," concluding the site did not meet Somerville's usual criteria for a city crossing guard because no children were observed during that sampling period. Cicero said the state currently staffs crossings at McGrath & Pearl and cited the Otis Street overpass as a historic reason the state declined additional crossing guards at McGrath & Broadway.
