Public urges stronger surface-water work; board broadens administrator work plan language

Multiple public commenters urged stronger county action to address nutrient and sediment loading in local watersheds. Celeste Cobrel described decades of impaired water quality on the Willow River and how runoff contributes phosphorus and nitrogen to Lake Malalu and downstream to the St. Croix River, urging continued support for programs and funding in agenda items the county was considering. "We all need and we all want clean water," she said, and asked supervisors to support resolutions on the meeting agenda tied to water-quality programming.

Public comment was followed by a discussion of the county administrator's work plan. Supervisor Hansen moved to broaden a specific reference to Lake Malalu to a more general directive: "including facilitating ongoing discussions about surface water quality of all water bodies within the county." The amendment sparked debate—some supervisors, including Supervisor Roan, recommended retaining a specific Lake Malalu reference as a symbolic olive branch to re-engage parties, while Supervisor Hansen argued limited county resources should address all county water bodies. The Hansen amendment passed 16–2 and the work plan was adopted by the board 18–0.

Administrator Ken confirmed that the county will facilitate ongoing discussions about water-quality improvements in general, and that a Lake Malalu meeting of key parties was already planned for late in the year or early next year as part of those efforts.
