SmartBus operator says tests support new routing; flags ADA and stop-size constraints

SmartBus operator Greg Clem said route tests show 5th Street handles most loading/unloading (about 50%), recommended larger stop zones (about 100 feet) and warned that ADA lifts and parked vehicles complicate Broadway operations; he said he could implement changes sooner than a planned September pilot if signage and communication are in place.

Greg Clem of SmartBus told the committee that operational testing indicates a majority of passengers get off at 5th Street while the rest disburse at 3rd, so 5th functions as the primary hub. Clem said testing and operational experience informed the staff-and-contractor alternative that shifts pick-ups and drop-offs away from the narrow boardwalk area.
