Commissioners back county training effort after concerns about mandatory costs for firefighters

A county commissioner questioned the county's plan to require a training program for firefighters that the board budgeted at roughly $400 per person, calling the expense "a little hard for me to understand." The comment came during commissioner remarks after regular agenda items.

Staff said the county had completed internal and third‑party evaluations that identified areas for improvement in the fire department and that a coach had begun meeting with the fire chief. Staff described the training as mandatory because leadership concluded broad staff participation was necessary to address cultural and operational challenges. "We want this one to be mandatory, if you will, because of the challenges we know that we are facing in the fire department," staff said, and added that scheduling the sessions has required coordination with ongoing department training.

Several commissioners expressed support for engagement with career firefighters and leadership and asked staff to ensure front‑line personnel are included as sessions are scheduled. Staff said the training is being coordinated and that tasks and follow‑ups from the initial coaching session will be returned to the board as needed.
