Mike Whitaker, Columbia County Special Projects Manager, described the unit's role as handling projects "out of the normal operations," including widening, intersection improvements and sidewalk renovations or new installations. He cited the widening for turn lanes on William Few Parkway and sidewalk or school-zone work around Riverwood, Mullican Road and South Old Bell areas to support safer routes for students.
