Supervisors debate decommissioning rules but reject amendment

During second reading of the data‑center ordinance one supervisor proposed an amendment to create decommissioning requirements including restoration standards, financial-assurance levels, abandonment triggers and a cost-estimate methodology. Proponents raised concerns about large facilities' uncertain futures and taxpayer liability if a facility is abandoned. Opponents argued data centers are large industrial buildings similar to other industrial projects and questioned the county's authority to prescribe private long-term plans for landowners.

After extended discussion, the amendment was put to a voice vote. Chair called for 'All in favor' and then 'All opposed'; the clerk announced the amendment did not pass. Supervisors said they will continue to explore a broader countywide decommissioning policy but declined to attach specific decommissioning requirements to the data‑center ordinance at this time.
