Chatham County adopts 12‑month moratorium on permitting data centers

The Chatham County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt a temporary moratorium of up to 12 months (02/11/2026–02/11/2027) halting permits for data centers, data-processing facilities and cryptocurrency mining in unincorporated county areas while staff studies impacts and drafts regulations.

The Chatham County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 11 adopted an ordinance instituting a temporary moratorium of up to 12 months on permitting data centers, data‑processing facilities, cryptocurrency mining operations and associated uses in unincorporated Chatham County pursuant to general statute 160D‑107.
