Avon fire chief warns construction and roundabout could hinder emergency response

Danny Brock, the fire chief who signed up to speak, told the plan commission the proposed roundabout and lane widening could impede the department’s ability to respond to emergencies during construction and might encroach on drainage and landscaped areas the fire station needs. "The proposed roundabout and road widening directly impacts our ability to respond to emergencies, by restricting our path down a main thoroughfare and the ingress and egress to the station," Brock said, urging coordination during construction and consideration of apparatus routing.

Chief Brock said the department’s concerns centered on the construction period and the potential need to reroute apparatus through neighborhoods while work is underway. He noted that construction staging and the design of the roundabout — including mountable splitter islands and truck aprons — would influence how apparatus can navigate the area. Planning staff and the petitioner told the commission they would coordinate staging plans with the fire department and DPW; DPW said it would consider truck aprons and mountable features during design review to preserve apparatus access.
