Head Start operator warns Bakersfield site could close if county doesn't renew lease

Jan 21, 2026

Intermountain Children's Services told commissioners that a June 30 lease expiration could force Head Start and private daycare services out of Bakersfield, displacing 34 children the agency currently serves there and prompting a multi‑year timeline to restore equivalent Head Start capacity elsewhere.

The full story

Tranika Ayers, executive director of Intermountain Children's Services, told the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners that the agency needs the county's support to maintain occupancy of the building beside the courthouse that houses Head Start and a private day care. Ayers said Head Start currently enrolls 16 children and the private day care serves 18; she added Head Start slots include children in foster/kinship care and students served under McKinney‑Vento homelessness provisions and stressed the program prioritizes at‑risk children.
