Commissioners weigh culvert option as bridge on F Rd remains closed; county addresses multiple road maintenance needs

County staff reported a state-closed bridge on F Rd and a drainage study recommending a 10‑ft culvert; commissioners expressed a preference for a 6‑ft culvert pending further review. The board also discussed speed sign placement, winter graveling, private contractor liability for blading, and equipment outages affecting Q Rd.

Commissioner Kurt Ifland and Assistant Road Supervisor Travis Story led a series of road updates at the Oct. 20 Smith County Commissioners meeting. Story said the work completed on 310 Rd between M Rd and O Rd "will help with the issue," and noted the Q Rd project will continue with the track loader because the dozer is losing antifreeze and is out for repair. Ifland also raised resident concerns about vehicle speeds on A Rd between Hwy 9 and 220 Rd; Story stated, "they can put up the sign on the Smith County side," indicating county crews can install speed signage on county-maintained sections.
