Probation office requests fifth supervisor as caseloads near DCJS limits

A department presenter told the committee the probation office is structured with office specialists, four supervisors and teams handling adult supervision, alternatives to incarceration, investigations and juvenile units, and that the office is at the maximum supervisor capacity permitted under New York state Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) regulations.

The presenter requested adding a fifth supervisor to redistribute cases and to serve as a staff development officer. "For the adult supervision cases... some of the higher risk caseloads, we have a lower number. So those are between 45, 50," the presenter said, adding other adult caseloads can be "up to about 65" while juveniles are "probably at the most... 15 to 25." The presenter said an August 2026 snapshot showed about 615 people under probation supervision (youth and adult combined).

The proposed fifth supervisor would spend roughly 70% of time on training, mandatory academies and DCJS communication and 30% supervising programs such as the day reporting program and pretrial staff. The presenter said adding the supervisor would create capacity for current supervisors to focus on oversight. The committee asked for recidivism and outcome data; the presenter said specific recidivism figures were not immediately available and committed to providing data at a later meeting.
