Board approves modernization contract for historic Duluth Courthouse elevators
The board awarded a contract to Larson Elevator Company to modernize two courthouse elevators installed in 1939; staff said last major modernization was in 1989 and that ADA upgrades and 2026 code compliance are included.

County facilities staff presented a resolution to modernize elevators 1 and 2 in the historic Duluth Courthouse and the board approved the contract award to Larson Elevator Company of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Staff emphasized the urgency after a state elevator inspector reviewed the system and said modernization was necessary to avoid being taken out of service. “They were originally installed in 1939. The last modernization was in 1989,” facilities staff said.
