Researchers show billing examples: credits, caps and prepayments explained

UVM researchers and AOT staff walked senators through concrete examples of how mileage bills and credits will show up in myDMV accounts, how a $89 registration credit offsets bills, and how a $178 early cap would affect high-mileage drivers until later years.

Claire Nelson of the UVM Transportation Research Center and AOT staff presented account-level examples to make the billing mechanics concrete for senators. Nelson explained that when someone pays the regular $89 registration, that amount appears in their myDMV account as a credit toward the first mileage bill; a sample account showed the $89 credit applied to a $154 calculated mileage bill, producing a $65 balance. "So you'd see a $65 bill in your account," Nelson said.
