Board hears plan for district AI scope‑and‑sequence and teacher controls in classroom tool

Board members discussed integrating artificial intelligence into the district curriculum while keeping teacher control and appropriate guardrails. A board member asked how the district is preparing students to use AI meaningfully rather than only policing misuse; staff explained an AI committee formed last fall is designing a scope‑and‑sequence across grade levels and plans to finish and roll out teacher training this year.

"So as a district, we have a district AI committee that we started in the fall of last year," a staff member explained, adding the committee is developing a scope and sequence and will push out staff training this fall. The district has licensed Magic School, a platform that permits teachers to toggle student access and tailor tools — grammar editing, research assistance or math tutoring — to the lesson. "Essentially, it puts guardrails on it and gives the teacher control over what tools the students have access to that day in the classroom," staff said.

Board members generally supported the governance approach and requested periodic updates on the committee's scope and any pilot lessons. The administration agreed to bring members of the AI committee to a future board meeting to outline the planned skills progression and sample lesson structures.
