Council approves bringing draft backyard-chickens ordinance back for August discussion

Council voted to bring a draft ordinance allowing backyard chickens back for further discussion at the August meeting after members aired concerns about enforcement, neighborhood compatibility and staff workload; the motion passed with four yes votes, two no votes.

Mayor T. Gregory Kochuba introduced the agenda item and said the purpose was "to give staff direction to further pursue discussions regarding allowing chickens." Council debated the proposal: Councilwoman Tricia L. Palmer said she had received multiple emails supporting chickens and favored a public hearing; Councilman John T. Wood said City Code did not allow chickens and warned that permitting them would increase demands on staff and law enforcement; Councilwoman Elizabeth G. Luck said chickens could cause noise, odor and pest issues in closely spaced neighborhoods and favored keeping the current ordinance.
