Board members reviewed a proposed WASB resolution to remove restrictions that currently allow only up to 15% of districts to start earlier than Sept. 1. Supporters argued the cap is arbitrary and removing it would let districts tailor calendars to local needs — for example to lengthen a locally run Summer Excel program that now often has only two to three weeks of programming before the July 1 cutoff. As one proponent put it, current rules “compounds everything because once you get to the...summer weeks just fly by.”
