Board accepts final Wekiva watershed basin studies; modeling increases local 100‑year floodplain by about 8.7%

Seminole County accepted the final basin studies for Big Wekiva, Little Wekiva and Yankee Lake, which used updated modeling to show 11.2 square miles of 100‑year floodplain in the three basins — about an 8.7% increase over existing FEMA maps — and staff will submit study results to FEMA for FIRM updates.

Public Works’ chief design engineer Joseph Mafaso presented the Wekiva Watershed Management Plan — the final basin study for Big Wekiva, Little Wekiva and Yankee Lake basins. The modeling work produced updated inundation maps that show 11.2 square miles of 100‑year floodplain in the three basins, compared with 10.3 square miles on FEMA maps based on older data, an increase of roughly 8.7%.
