Wayne County commissioners propose stronger data center rules on liners, reporting and transmission plans

Commissioners reviewed a package of amendments to the county's data center ordinance that would tighten retention-pond liners, require annual compliance reporting, add decommissioning and financial-assurance language, and require upfront transmission coordination and construction management plans.

At a work session the board discussed a set of proposed amendments to Wayne County's data center ordinance intended to strengthen environmental safeguards and local oversight if a high-energy data center were to locate nearby. Staff walked commissioners through multiple changes, including thicker geomembrane retention pond liners, required subgrade testing and test ports, annual compliance reporting on water use and noise, decommissioning/site-stabilization plans and disclosure of transmission and construction impacts.
