Thompson Veterinary Center seeks setback variance to add waiting room

Thompson Veterinary Center asked Polk County to reduce a State Road 60 right-of-way setback from 65 feet to 19 feet so it can build a waiting-room addition to accommodate more clients; county staff recommended approval and the hearing officer said a written order will follow within 14 days.

Jan McDonald, the Polk County land use hearing officer, opened the May 28 hearing on LDL VAR 2026-14 and heard staff present the Thompson Veterinary Center's request to reduce a 65-foot right-of-way setback to 19 feet for a new waiting-room addition at 3631 East State Road 60. Case planner Aliyah and Gleima told the hearing the site is a grandfathered commercial use on a 2.2-acre parcel and that staff recommends approval because the parcel's lot configuration constrains expansion under current setbacks.
