County urged to adopt 10-year Community Wildfire Protection Plan to reduce lake-community fire risk

Emergency management staff and consultants presented a 162-page Community Wildfire Protection Plan identifying wildfire as the countys top hazard, outlining mitigation actions, eligibility for grant funding, and a governance approach; staff asked the board to adopt the plan to make the county eligible for grant opportunities and to enable annual oversight.

Roscommon County emergency management director Vanessa Varner and consultant George Merceron presented the final Community Wildfire Protection Plan and asked the board to adopt the plan so the county and partner fire departments can pursue grant-funded mitigation and coordination work. The 10-year plan updates a 2016 blueprint and includes GIS map layers, recommendations for community education and recruitment for volunteer fire departments, fuel reduction and access improvements around lake communities, and a proposed governance and maintenance schedule with five-year updates.
