At a Feb. 3 special meeting, the Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education approved Resolution 55 (consent agenda) on a 5–0 vote after no public comment was offered.
Following a closed session requested in writing by a student’s family, the Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education voted 6–0 to affirm a disciplinary decision (Resolution 56) at a Feb. 3 special meeting.
After a day of public interviews and a deliberation process in which trustees narrowed nine finalists to four finalists, the Birmingham Public Schools Board voted 4–2 to appoint Omar O'Day to the vacant Board seat. Trustees also approved the consent agenda earlier in the meeting.
The Birmingham Board of Education voted 6-0 to ratify a tentative agreement with the Birmingham Association of Technology Operational Associates covering six members; trustees cited a closed-session review prior to the public vote.
The board reconsidered a bylaws update it had approved Aug. 26 after administrators solicited feedback from association leadership; trustees approved the Miller Johnson-recommended updates 6-0.
Business services and bond consultants reported construction progress across elementary and secondary schools, listed upcoming bid packages and named contractors and consultants involved in the final phase of the 2020 bond program.
Public commenters, union representatives and teachers urged the Birmingham Board of Education to restore full step increases and increase compensation. The board read a statement about audits and fund balances and then voted 6-0 to move into closed session for collective-bargaining strategy.
The board voted 5–0 to increase the construction contingency by $285,000 to cover discovery and proper disposal of contaminated soil at the district transportation lot; staff said work is required to comply with EGLE and state regulations and to keep the paving project on schedule.
The board unanimously approved updates to the district bylaws and policy manual based on Miller Johnson’s recommendations, including language on safe storage, behavioral threat assessment teams, school crisis response, and distinctions between district therapy dogs and individual service animals under ADA.
The board approved contract award for bid package T14 to install radio boosters for first responders, replace internal radios, and upgrade intrusion detection systems; projects are bond‑funded and intended to improve emergency communications and facilities monitoring.
