The Washington State House debated and passed (54-42) a revised version of second substitute Senate Bill 5974, which updates eligibility, certification and decertification rules for sheriffs and other law-enforcement leaders and adds procedures for volunteers and specially commissioned officers. Debate focused on whether an unelected commission should be able to decertify an elected sheriff and whether that would undermine local accountability.
