Summary
The commission approved a two‑story plus cellar rear addition at 119 Bergen Street after finding the proposal modest in scale and consistent with surrounding rear‑yard additions in the block.
The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday approved a two‑story rear‑yard addition with cellar excavation at 119 Bergen Street in the Boerum Hill Historic District Extension.
Architect Alexandra Barker and project manager Andy Paz presented plans for a 14‑foot projection at cellar, basement and first‑floor levels, with a four‑foot deck and stairs to the rear yard. The design calls for stucco cladding on the addition to match neighboring rear additions; a wood‑screened HVAC condensing unit in a sunken patio under the new deck has already been approved at staff level.
Barker said the block contains many rear additions — 29 of 61 buildings in the block donut have additions — and noted the proposed 14‑foot projection does not exceed the largest existing projection on the Bergen Street side. Commissioners found the addition modest and compatible with surrounding secondary facades. Brooklyn Community Board 2 recommended approval. The commission adopted a motion to approve the certificate of appropriateness by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
