Summary
The commission approved a modest rooftop stair bulkhead and a one-story extension at the rear of a Boerum Hill row house at 183 Wyckoff Street after staff review found minimal public visibility and compatibility with rear-yard precedents on the block.
The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a proposal June 17 to construct a sloped rooftop stair bulkhead and a one-story addition at the rear of 183 Wyckoff Street in the Boerum Hill Historic District.
Preservation staff explained the rear extension would extend an existing two‑story rear addition by about 14 feet and be clad in brick with gray stucco on side elevations; the rooftop bulkhead would be stucco-clad and measure approximately 8 feet 5 inches at its tallest point. Staff found the rear addition would be minimally visible through a nearby community garden and that the bulkhead would be visible only over a secondary facade.
Historic-district reviewers also noted the block contains a range of rear-yard extensions and that the proposed massing and materials were consistent with nearby examples. After consideration, commissioners voted to approve the work. The approval includes that mock-ups and material choices be compatible with the district’s fabric and that the work would not diminish the district’s special character.
