The Georgetown-Quitman County Commission on Dec. 9 approved routine financial items, set the county’s 2026 holiday and meeting schedule and heard operations updates from County Manager Jason Weeks.
County Manager Jason Weeks reported October EMS activity, saying the county recorded 35 total calls in October, 23 transports, eight refusals and four cancellations, with an average response time of seven minutes; Weeks said the county gave mutual aid five times and received mutual aid twice. Weeks also told commissioners that the county began charging a landfill dumping fee on Oct. 27 to help offset disposal costs.
Weeks updated the commission on several infrastructure matters tied to a Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) project: BSI is preparing a right-of-way dedication certificate from CatchMark Timber for property adjacent to Plantation Boulevard, and the county attorney will execute required documents. He also said deeds for County Road 15 will be completed so Chairman Carvel Lewis can sign to effect an official road closure. On zoning, Weeks said the county attorney will have a first amendment to the zoning ordinance ready for the commission’s December meeting.
On procedural items, the board approved the previous month’s check register (motion by Commissioner Richard Baggett; second by Commissioner Willie H. Bussey Jr.), approved the December bills (motion by Commissioner David Kinsey; second by Commissioner Jerry Green) and approved the Oct. 14 regular meeting minutes (motion by Baggett; second by Green). The commission also approved the 2026 holiday and meeting schedule (motion by Kinsey; second by Baggett). Votes on those motions were recorded as Yes – Bussey, Kinsey, Baggett, Green.
The Family Connections representative, Sara Lee Crumbs, reported scheduled senior produce deliveries, volunteer needs for Toys for Tots and a planned Christmas bike giveaway; she said the county’s State Hope grant application has been submitted and is pending. The board was also informed that County Manager Weeks will participate in interviews for the 4-H coordinator position.
The meeting moved into executive session to discuss possible litigation and personnel matters and returned to open session; the minutes state that nothing discussed in executive session required a formal vote. The commission adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
