ROE updates: scholarship deadline, compliance visits and short‑term approvals to ease teacher vacancies

Summary
The Regional Office of Education told the committee about ongoing five‑year compliance visits to schools, highlighted the Joseph Hohner scholarship (deadline Apr. 16) and described short‑term approval routes and grants that have helped reduce teacher vacancies across the state.
Ryan, representing the Regional Office of Education (ROE), told the committee the ROE has been completing compliance visits across local schools — five‑year check‑ins focusing on background checks, professional development and health/life/safety walkthroughs. "Every school gets evaluated... we check‑in with them every 5 years," Ryan said.
Ryan reminded the committee the Joseph Hohner scholarship application is due Thursday, April 16, at 4:00 p.m.; he said the scholarship has run for more than 30 years and the ROE has issued more than $2 million in awards. "Scholarship ranges anywhere from a $100 to $3,000, every year just based on the money we're making on that trust," he said.
On staffing, Ryan credited a teacher vacancy grant and relaxed short‑term approval processes after COVID for easing shortages. "Basically, if you knew someone, good character, good qualities, they gave us a little more flexibility in getting them in the classroom," Ryan said, describing short‑term approvals that allow qualified candidates to start teaching while completing full certification requirements.
Carol from school health services reported continuing vision and hearing screenings, upcoming mental‑health screenings and a Beacon portal that lists behavioral and mental health services for families. "They're gonna be starting mental health screenings in the schools," she said, and recommended the committee review available resources.
What’s next: Scholarship deadline Apr. 16; ROE encouraged districts to use short‑term approvals and grants to address staffing. The committee approved related school services bills and reports by voice vote.
